A trained engineer, Louis Delage began his automotive career at Peugeot in 1903, launching his own company just two years later. From the beginning, Delage was unquestionably one of the world’s front-running marques, with Grand Prix and Indianapolis racing successes. It was equally known for its excellent grand tourers, strict quality control and jewel-like detailing.

In 1921, the Delage road car line included the newly introduced GL, essentially a revision of the prior CO with an overhead valve-train and increased power, which was fitted with a number of sporting and skiff-type bodies and developed into the single overhead cam GL S and the dual overhead cam GL GS. In addition, Delage produced over 13,000 four-cylinder cars in the DO, DE and DI series during the 1920s, as well as just 1,540 six-cylinder CO models, followed by the DM-DR models of 1926, the last of which were the DMN, of which just 897 examples were produced.

The car offered here, chassis 31453, was fitted with faux cabriolet coachwork by Figoni in December 1929 and delivered to Smith’s Garage in London, England. Its first recorded owner was M.O. Wetter, a Belgian diplomat. In the 1960s, Sir Peter Graham purchased, restored and retained it for many years before a Belgian collector acquired 31453 in 1993, freshening its restoration and touring and displaying it during his tenure. It has been in the same collection since 2007. The DMN remains a very attractive automobile, from its unique Figoni coachwork and handsome colour combination to the interior detailing and well-presented engine compartment. It is at once elegant yet remarkably sporty, and its six-cylinder engine is sure to make it a pleasure to drive.
