The Land Rover was conceived by the British Rover Company following World War II as a handy light duty and farming vehicle spawned from the Willys Jeep concept. Over the years, it has grown into a highly-respected, very capable and well-designed 4x4 for both off-road and daily urban use.
This particular Land Rover Defender is reported to be previously owned by an affluent, longtime Martha’s Vineyard family. It was used sparingly during the summers at the family compound on the Vineyard for island sport fishing transport and jaunts about Edgar town, Chilmark and the island acreage in general. It has obviously been well-cared-for and sports its original Coniston Green paint, now nearly 20 years on.
As part of a small, private New England collection, the Land Rover has never been run during the winter months; nor has it ever been run in the rain or off-roaded. All freshening work has been performed by veteran Rover specialist Cityside Garage in Holliston, Massachusetts. This included undercarriage treatment and galvanized structural crossmember frame.
The Land Rover Defender 90 runs with a 3.9-liter, 182-hp 16 valve V-8 engine that is paired to a five-speed gearbox. This 4x4 platform has a two-speed transfer case with lockable center differential. The truck is a “significantly modified” Limited Edition with original and authentic air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, heater, auxiliary engine fan, alloy wheels, AM/FM/cassette radio, special bumper, removable rear bench seat, rear-mounted waterproof swivel work light for illumination after dark, plus lamp guards for all rear lights.
The weather-secure tan fabric top is by Badger, recommended supplier to Land Rover, and maker of the finest quality tops. This is the tan British Military vesion which is very snug in cool weather. Rigid Plexiglass side curtains for both doors are new, as is the load-space liner mat and footwell mats. In addition, there are custom-fitted chromed diamond plate side steps. The Land Rover also has four new and correctly rated Dunlop Radial Rover P265/75 R16 tires. The original owner’s manual, original jack and log book accompany this comfortable and elegant truck, along with its work record. In addition, a full set of new side-curtains and sliding glass front side-windows come with this Defender as well.
