In an era of unbridled enthusiasm at General Motors, the manufacturer sought to take on not only the best of Japan, but of Europe, as well. Buick’s Reatta was an attempt to build an exclusive two-seater that would compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s SL convertibles. It was constructed on the Riviera platform, with a transverse-mounted V-6 engine driving the front wheels, fully independent suspension, and a fascinating digital instrument cluster. A highly specialized production process with no small amount of hand craftsmanship took place at the aptly named GM Craft Centre in Lansing.

Reattas built in 1991, the final year of production, are the most sought after, thanks to the newly introduced 3800 engine and 4T60-E transmission, as well as other improvements, including anti-lock brakes, 16-inch wheels, and automatic headlamps. In its four years, only about 21,000 Reattas were made; the 1,519 built in 1991 accounted for just under seven percent of production, making it the rarest Reatta of them all.

The Reatta offered here was one of 27 1991 models finished in this color scheme, Black over a Slate interior, with the very rare factory power sunroof. Unusually well-preserved, it recorded just 24,290 actual miles at the time of cataloguing. Further, it is believed to retain its original paint, as finishes are very consistent throughout, and the original interior is still in remarkable condition, with very light wear only to the driver’s side bolster. Its engine compartment is in superbly clean and tidy order. Mr. Leith notes that the Reatta has been serviced in preparation for sale with new headlight motors, new correct shock absorbers, an oil and filter change, and updating of the air conditioning with modern refrigerant. Thus presented in ready-to-enjoy condition, it is accompanied by its original folio with pen, pressure gauge, and manuals, including the signed “Craftsman’s Log,” documenting its hand-crafted assembly process with signatures of production supervisors.

This is an exceptional example of a fascinating modern GM product—quick, comfortable, exclusive, and rapidly growing in popularity.
