The Citroen SM was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 1970, and it went on sale in September of that year. Citroen introduced a stylish, high performance two-door model that blended the famous air-oil suspension with a powerful Maserati engine. The sleek body design featured quad headlamps, a squared-off rear end, rear fender skirts and large rear windows. The cars came equipped with front and rear disc brakes, featuring an anti-locking device. Air conditioning, a radio and a five-speed manual gearbox were standard equipment. In 1970 this was the car of the future, and the fastest front-wheel drive car. The factory said the car was capable of speeds upwards of 140-mph. The SM combines many unusual features that were very advanced for the day, and these options have just lately been adapted to late model vehicles.

Under the bonnet of this aerodynamic SM Coupe is a strong aluminum 2.7-liter, 170-hp Maserati V-6 engine paired with a manual gearbox. The car is loaded with power steering, brakes and windows, plus air conditioning. The outside is completed in black paint matched by a lovely black interior that has styling details that complement the exterior design of the car.

The editors of Petersen’s 1971 Import Car Buyer’s Guide said it “was like being in another world- a world of speed, comfort, and safety never felt before on any other car we have driven!” And the 1972 Citroen SM was named Motor Trends ‘Car of the Year.’

This 1972 Citroen SM Coupe is finished in a gorgeous Black over Black color combination with excellent paint finish and beautiful original leather interior. A U.S. delivered car from new, this SM comes out of a long term ownership and has seen the proper maintenance and care that this car deserves. These exceptional automobiles carry the unique Citroen Hydropneumatic that levels the car under certain driving conditions. This SM’s suspension has just been properly sorted and recently serviced by a Citroen specialist. All of the hydraulic functions in the car are in excellent working order including the hydraulic assist steering, the hydraulic clutch and brakes and the suspension.

The engine has also just undergone a full service and tune up and runs and drives as you would except from this unique French/Italian thoroughbred. An excellent straight body sits on this SM’s beautifully balanced chassis with no rust or corrosion of any kind. Accompanying the sale of this rare automobile is the original Citroen owners handbook, original Citroen keys, spare tire with original cover and jack.
