Buick replaced the Roadmaster in 1959 with the Electra. Production of the full-size flagship spanned six generations, lasting all the way through 1990, with many changes over its lifespan. Among the most significant was the switch from General Motors’ long-running, full-size, rear-wheel-drive C-body platform to a smaller, front-wheel-drive chassis, starting with the car’s fifth generation in 1977. Overnight, the Electra shed 11 inches in length and 800 pounds, rendering the venerable 455-cubic-inch V-8 of previous generations overkill. Buick replaced it with a 350-cubic-inch eight-cylinder as standard and an optional 403-cubic-inch V-8. The smaller, lighter 1977 Electra proved popular, with sales of the revamped model more than doubling the previous year’s.

Like so many cars in the impressive Leith collection, this 1979 Buick Electra Park Avenue Coupe is astoundingly well-preserved. Its original owner, Esther Olson of Blair, Nebraska, is said to have encountered the Antique White coupe at a dealership while visiting her daughter in St. Louis, Missouri, and was so taken by it that she purchased the Buick on the spot, according to correspondence from her granddaughter on file. Mrs. Olson is said to have kept the car mostly stored in a garage in Blair, taking it on occasional trips to her grandfather’s cabin in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, six-and-a-half hours north. In 2002, she gave the Electra to her son, a Buick collector, who is said to have taken it to local cruise nights in Blair.

The car would spend another 22 years in Blair—45 in total, with the Olson family—before being sold in 2024 to its next owner in Staten Island, New York. It augmented the venerable Leith collection in February 2026, where the elegant coupe has remained well looked after, as all Leith cars invariably are. The stunning presentation of its factory finishes is plain to see in the white vinyl top, the Dark Carmine upholstery, and the tidy engine bay. After some detailing, this Electra will be ready to make a grand impression at Buick Club of America meets as an integral and cherished member of another loving family.
