When Ferrari introduced the Pininfarina-designed 550 Maranello in 1996, a convertible model had been missing from the automaker’s lineup since the hallowed Daytona Spider ceased production more than two decades prior. Though customers were thrilled with the resulting 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, many felt limited by the lack of a conventional convertible top, which confined use to quick, out-and-back jaunts in the summertime. Ferrari responded in dramatic fashion and created a brand-new convertible top system that offered the freedom of the Barchetta with the practicality and security of the coupe.
Based on the upgraded 575M Maranello, the resulting Superamerica featured an innovative Revocromico rotating hardtop, the first of its kind ever fitted to a production car. It was constructed using a carbon fiber frame integrated with electrochromic glass. When the top was closed, the opacity of the glass could be adjusted via a dial in the cabin, allowing the driver and passenger to experience full brightness of a conventional sunroof at its lightest setting or just one percent of available light at its darkest. The ingenious top mechanism could also transform the Superamerica into a convertible at the touch of a button, with the roof rotating back to rest flush with the rear deck in just 10 seconds.
This 2005 Ferrari Superamerica is finished in Rosso Corsa (DS 322) over beige leather (4208) and features Daytona-style seats and carbon fiber interior accents. Equipped with the F1-style six-speed paddle-shift transmission, Becker Silverstone six-disc CD changer, and the remarkable Revocromico rotating roof, this example rides on light alloy Barchetta-style wheels and is adorned with matching Scuderia fender shields. The Superamerica was imported by Ferrari North America and sold new through Continental AutoSports of Hinsdale, Illinois, to its first private owner on Halloween 2005.
The car’s leather seats were refinished in 2023. In January 2024 the Superamerica was entrusted to FMS SoCal to complete a major service, which included replacing fluids, filters, and belts, in addition to addressing a coolant leak, fixing the reverse gear selector, and outsourcing a repair on the front bumper. In preparation for the sale, Ferrari of Newport Beach completed an annual service and addressed all items recommended by the advisor.
One of just 559 produced, this example, finished in a desirable color combination and having covered 13,670 miles from new, carries on the legendary Superamerica name in fine fashion.
