RM Sotheby’s first-ever auction in Portugal was a resounding success, attracting enthusiastic bidders from 38 countries and totaling over €10 million in gross sales.

Hundreds of eager enthusiasts from no less than 38 countries made the journey to the seaside resort region of Comporta, Portugal, to attend RM Sotheby’s first-ever auction to be held in the country. In a location on Mr. Sáragga’s scenic estate, the room was quickly filled to the brim with enthusiastic bidders keen to secure a piece of the eclectic collection. Maarten ten Holder, head of Europe, RM Sotheby’s, states, “Attendance was beyond our expectations, and we had multiple bidders on every lot, with more than half being completely new to RM Sotheby’s, which is an amazing statistic for any auction.” The result was many lots exceeding the pre-sale estimates to the delight of the audience and evoking numerous standing ovations following the winning bids.

The Sáragga Collection represented an eclectic range of vehicles, from Brass-Era models to contemporary sports and luxury cars, as well as a selection of vehicles with outstanding Portuguese provenance. A magnificent, comprehensively restored 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Tourer with a fascinating history brought highly spirited bidding between multiple buyers in the room, ultimately achieving a strong €680.000. The venerable 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring garnered significant attention pre-sale as one of five to be delivered in Signal Orange, ultimately reaching an outstanding €602.375. A Lisbon-delivery 1939 Delahaye 135M Cabriolet wearing elegant “Grand Luxe” coachwork by Chapron brought a final €331.250. One of only 30 believed to be in existence, a 1955 WD Denzel 1300 rich with Portuguese provenance sold for €314.375. A 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan with unique coachwork by Chapron, complete with a custom glass roof, found a new home for €342.500. A rally favorite, the 1972 Alpine-Renault A110 1300 shattered pre-sale expectations by climbing to double its estimate, ultimately grossing €195.500. Often referred to as the ”quintessential French sports car,” the 1925 Amilcar CGS surpassed expectations with a final bid of €100.050double its high estimate.

Paul Darvill, Car Specialist at RM Sotheby’s, said, “We enjoyed a remarkable afternoon here in Portugal. This was a very large collection of diverse collector cars, and we have conducted a significant sale in a completely new market for RM Sotheby’s.” In total, the auction grossed €10.191.425, with all 127 lots going to new homes.
