165 bhp, 303 cu. in. overhead-valve V-8 engine, Hydramatic transmission, coil-spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 120 in.
This 1953 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible is finished in original factory Lotus Cream with correct red leather upholstery, and it is a striking example of its kind. Only 8,310 convertible coupes were built by the factory, and this example comes with many great options that are scarcely found on automobiles of this period. More importantly, Oldsmobile historians believe this car to be one of approximately eight hundred three built with the Hydramatic before a fire destroyed that transmission’s factory in Livonia, Michigan, in August 1953. Subsequent Oldsmobiles received the less desirable Buick DynaFlow automatic during the downtime, when transmission production was transitioned to a new facility in nearby Willow Run, Michigan.
The car is in tip-top shape and very well equipped. It has a factory pushbutton AM radio and clock, a heater with defrost, a padded dash, a power top, a day/night mirror, bumper over-riders, an under-hood lamp, stone shields, fender skirts, wire wheel covers, and wide whitewall BFGoodrich Silvertown tires. A vintage Allstate bias-ply tire nicely dresses up the trunk area, which holds all of the proper jack equipment. The engine compartment is equally appealing, with much attention paid to proper aesthetics.
All of the chrome and trim found on the straight and true body is in excellent shape, as a result of the fastidious maintenance schedule, and photo documentation supports the full body-off restoration. This Super 88 is presented in a great color combination and with many rare and desirable options, and it is among the best to be found.
