325 bhp, 401 cu. in. Nailhead V-8 engine, automatic transmission, lowered independent front suspension with modified spindles, control arms, and coil springs, live rear axle with air ride, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 126 in.
When custom car creation was virtually at a standstill, Richard Zocchi inspired the resurgence of customizing 1950s cars in the 1970s. Since that time, Zocchi has designed and built countless customs that have gone on to win many prestigious national awards, and there’s no doubt that his designs have inspired even more.
This Invicta, appropriately dubbed Peaches & Cream, is a masterpiece of design and a beautiful example of Zocchi’s incredible style and attention to detail. The factory Buick body is certainly among the most challenging of all platforms to consider. The sweeping roofline had been chopped 2.5 inches and reshaped. Buick’s iconic stock headlamps were retained, as was the heavy fender line, which perfectly accentuated the personified Invicta face and continued all the way to the tail lamps. Headlight rings that had been sourced from a 1958 Mercury had been “frenched” into the tail lamps, and an endless array of subtle body and trim modifications can be seen by the trained eye, further accentuating the visual allure of this custom.
Following all of the metal finessing, the car was handed off to renowned master painter Art Himsl. Rich peach-colored hues were combined with cream accents and covered with a gold pearl topcoat, while subtle silver pinstriping separates each section. Peach and cream-colored leather was used to create the rolled and squared pleating that covers the seats, door panels, headliner, and trunk areas.
Upon completion, Peaches & Cream received the Goodguys’ Custom d’Elegance Award, which acknowledged it as a world premier custom car. This Invicta is a striking visual masterpiece that is unlike any other, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression.
