175 hp (DIN), 2,996 cc OHC inline six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, four-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with tube shocks and coil springs, single-pivot rear swing axle with tube shocks and coil springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 2,902 mm
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc featured the detuned engine from the 300 SL, including Bosch mechanical fuel injection, and was rumoured to have a true output of around 200 brake horsepower, significantly more than was stated. To remind any vehicles it had just passed, an ‘Einspritzmotor’ badge, referring to its fuel-injected engine, was emblazoned on the rear bumper. A further development fitted to the car from the 300 SL was the ‘low-pivot’ swing-axle rear suspension for comfortable touring.
Available as a roadster, cabriolet, or coupé, it was aimed at celebrities and high-profile individuals. It was hand-built to order with no regard to cost to meet their exacting requirements, including a choice of wood veneers, leather, and wool. Design details featured an ashtray that self-emptied into a catch-bin, options on rear seating arrangements, and either a Becker Mexico or Grundig radio was standard fitment with two large speakers in the foot wells. Accentuating its grand touring nature was the elegant fitted luggage specifically designed for the boot, which also came as standard with the car. The result was a car that beat its rivals in both performance and luxury.
The vehicle offered here is a beautiful example that has been subject to a complete restoration. As the original Mercedes-Benz data card reveals, it left the production line in 1957 destined for the New York dealership. It was fully loaded with features, including the Becker Mexico radio, which is still fitted to the vehicle. The black bodywork retains all the original chrome work, which was individually made to fit each car. Inside, the deep cream leather is matched with original handles and fittings capped off with the carefully restored walnut dashboard. The rear compartment includes a purpose-built stowage compartment, and exquisite fitted suitcases remain with the vehicle.
The 300 Sc is among the most desirable of all Mercedes-Benz’s post-war luxury models. It is a rare grand tourer and an exceptional hand-built automobile.
