Launched in 1992, the BMW 850 CSi became the flagship model in the 8 Series line-up. With its newly developed 380 PS S70 V-12 engine, the 850 CSi was capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. BMW produced 1,510 units over a four-year production period.
This 850 CSi is a special example. Selected from the 850 production line in 1990, it was designated as a development vehicle by BMW. Equipped with the S70 V-12 engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, this 8 Series was a pre-production prototype. It left the factory finished in a specially made Drake Brown metallic, with the cabin trimmed in Sandbeige and Black leather.
First registered by BMW on 24 January 1990, it was retained by the Munich-based manufacturer until 11 June 1993, after which the car was de-registered. This 850 CSi prototype was sold to the Venezuelan racing driver Johnny Cecotto and exported to his native country.
Today, this 850 CSi prototype retains its factory-correct colour scheme, and at time of cataloguing the odometer read just 8,643 kilometres. As part of the consigning owner’s collection, this BMW has formed part of a museum exhibition, so buyers are encouraged to carry out a mechanical inspection prior to returning this car to the road. This remarkable 8 Series presents a brilliant opportunity to acquire a piece of BMW production history.
