  • One of 485 Maserati Mexicos built from 1966-1973.
  • One of 175 produced with the larger 4.7-Litre DOHC V-8.
  • Power steering and air-conditioning equipped.

Two stories exist as to how the Maserati Mexico got its name. The prototype show car was sold to Mexican President Adolfo Lopex Mateos and the subsequent production car named after him. Another claims it received the moniker after a Mexican owner crashed a 5000 GT chassis and returned the car to Italy for repair. Regardless, all subsequent cars received the Mexico nameplate. The Mexico became the first Maserati to be equipped with servo-assisted disc brakes at all four wheels.

This is one of just 485 Mexicos produced from 1966 to 1973 including 175 equipped with Maserati’s 29 b0hp 4.7-liter DOHC V-8 engine. In 1969, the car was made available with a smaller 4.2-liter V-8 as used in the Quattroporte. Based on the chassis of the 5000 GT, the model debuted on the Vignale stand at the 1965 Turin Motor Show. It was well-received prompting Maserati to build the car.

Produced on June 7, 1967, Maserati Classiche documentation shows this car originally having been delivered to Rome, Italy; finished in Argento Auteuil (silver) over black leather. Today, it is finished in Rosso Rubino and equipped with Borrani chrome wire wheels and Pirelli blackwall tires. Inside you’ll find power steering, air conditioning, a wood trim steering wheel and shift knob, along with an upgraded Kenwood stereo radio with cassette player.

The vehicle is described as well-kept and appears to be mostly original under the bonnet where you will find the engine as delivered new. Believed to be an older restoration, it appears to have little wear and the chassis is original, but clean. Paint and chrome are presentable with some wear and use evident. Equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, this will provide its new owner with lively performance and an enjoyable driving experience.
