The 512 TR, an update of Ferrari’s famed Testarossa, brought about a host of welcome enhancements to keep the company’s iconic mid-engine, 12-cylinder supercar competitive against Lamborghini’s new Diablo. It was introduced at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show and was markedly improved over earlier models, as it featured an interior that had been given numerous updates to improve driver and passenger comfort, with the most notable changes being to the seats and steering wheel. Outside, the nose received a facelift to aid aerodynamics, while the majority of the exterior remained largely unchanged.

Underneath its gorgeous styling, the 512 TR gained 38 additional horsepower, thanks to a more efficient exhaust system and the adoption of Nikasil cylinder liners. Ferrari engineers focused on increasing the car’s overall drivability by installing quicker steering, a single-plate clutch coupled to a smoother gearbox, and larger cross-drilled brake discs. Top speed was increased to 195 mph, just shy of the F40’s incredible 201 mph and at a fraction of the price. Yes, all things considered, the 512 TR was even something of a bargain!

The 1993 model offered here was originally delivered to Continental Motors, of Hinsdale, Illinois, as is verified by its window sticker, which remains with the car. In 1995, this Ferrari, finished in the unusual and rather menacing livery of Nero over Grigio, was acquired by Bob Pond from the Auto Toy Store, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and it has remained in the well-known Southern California collection ever since.

This 512 TR has been driven just under 2,800 actual miles, and it remains in wonderful condition, both inside and out, as it has been preserved to the “nearly new” car that it actually is. Importantly, in addition to the aforementioned window sticker, it is also accompanied by two sets of keys, its original books, and a complete original tool set, which is still encased in its Schedoni leather case—everything that the buyer would have received from the dealer in 1993. As the car has seen limited mileage since new, a thorough inspection is advised prior to extended use.

Ferrari’s 512 TR has proven to be an icon of the early 1990s, with distinct roots to the Testarossa before it but also with enough updates to set it apart from its predecessor. As the last normal production Ferrari flat-twelve produced, the model has a distinct following, and it is widely adored by owners and enthusiasts alike. This would be an excellent automobile for the individual looking for the style of the Testarossa but with some added power and creature comforts, or simply for the man who missed out on buying a 512 TR new.
