Believed to be one of just four examples imported to the UK by official dealers Mitchell & Britten and converted to RHD after its arrival in the UK by Hooper & Co, this 400 GT was delivered new to perhaps one of the most famous singer/songwriters of the 20th century, Sir Paul McCartney of The Beatles.

Reportedly delivered to McCartney in February of 1968 and subsequently registered SLF 406F, it would have entered McCartney’s garage hot off the heels of the hugely successful albums Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Magical Mystery Tour, with The White Album to arrive later that year. McCartney’s ownership of the car is mentioned in a few modern publications, including Lamborghini Supreme Amongst Exotics by Andrew Moreland; Lamborghini by Chris Harvey; and Lamborghini: The Legend by David Hodges.

Remaining in the UK after leaving McCartney’s ownership, the 400 GT was purchased by a new owner in 1979, by which time it had been refinished in its current dark red over beige interior. Regularly driven and properly maintained during his ownership, it is noted that the gearbox was rebuilt in 1988 and the rear suspension was rebuilt in 1994. After selling chassis no. 01141 in 1989, the owner quickly began to regret his choice and managed to reacquire the car in 1996. When out of his ownership, the car remained largely unchanged and had only accrued an additional 800 miles.

Acquired by its current custodian in 2011, the car was shipped to Hong Kong where it resided in a climate-controlled showroom within Lamborghini Hong Kong. It is accompanied today by an assortment of bills, a copy of its old UK V5 for SLF 406F, as well as period sales brochures, a reproduction parts manual and a logbook.

The acquisition of this 400 GT provides limitless opportunities for its next owner. Perfect for the Beatles fanatic, it could be kept as is, driven and enjoyed, or it would revel in a restoration to its former glory, for future enjoyment as an item central to one of the music industry’s most beloved figures.
