Built for the 1963 model year and delivered new to its native Germany, this Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet was equipped when-new with the desirable floor-shift manual gearbox. Interestingly, the car was purchased new by a member of the US armed forces deployed in Germany, and it is presumed that he shipped the car home with him at the end of his deployment.
Eventually, the car made its way back to Germany, where it was fully restored to concours condition; copies of restoration photos are on file. Importantly, the car retains its numbers-matching engine, as well as the correct floor-shift manual gearbox. The most recent previous owner purchased this car at Retro Classics Stuttgart in 2015, having been seriously impressed with the quality of the restoration. Since his purchase, the car has reportedly been driven roughly 1,000 km since its restoration and would surely revel in further use.
The Mercedes was shown at the Coppa Classic Concours in Belgium where it won the award for “Best Restored Car”. The car was acquired by Mr. Guikas in 2020 and it remains in beautiful condition today.
Stately, sophisticated, and timeless, these W111-generation Cabriolets were produced in one of Mercedes-Benz’s “golden eras” and have proven to be hugely popular today for their design and usability. This attractive Burgundy over tan example would be perfect for concours or regular use in sunny locales anywhere in the world. It is offered for sale with a tonneau cover, tool roll, fire extinguisher, and warning triangle, as well as owner’s manuals and a copy of its factory data card.
