The British-based Arrows Grand Prix team was active in Formula 1 beginning in 1978. In 1990 Japanese businessman Wataru Ohashi began investing in the team, with the Footwork logo becoming one of the team’s primary sponsors. He would eventually purchase an interest in the team, and from 1991 to 1996 the team was campaigned under the Footwork Arrows banner. Despite having notable drivers through the Arrows paddock the team saw little success; the 2002 German Grand Prix would mark its final race.
Designed by Ross Brawn, the Arrows A11 debuted for the 1989 Formula 1 season. It was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre Ford Cosworth V-8 engine backed by an Arrows/Hewland five-speed manual gearbox. With team drivers Derek Warwick and Eddie Cheever behind the wheel, Arrows finished 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship.
For the 1990 Formula 1 season Arrows campaigned the A11B, which carried over the same engine and gearbox from the prior year’s A11 and received minor suspension upgrades. Arrows team drivers for 1990 were Michele Alboreto and Alex Caffi. Arrows finished in 9th place in the Constructors’ Championship for that year.
This car, chassis number A11B03, debuted at the 1990 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, a race in which the team unfortunately did not qualify. The following race, the Monaco Grand Prix, the car again failed to qualify. A11B03 would make its official racing debut on 10 June 1990 in the Canadian Grand Prix held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It was subsequently raced at the Mexican, French, British, German, Hungarian, Belgium, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and the Japanese Grands Prix. In the 11 races the car participated in during the 1990 Formula 1 season, its best result came at the Portuguese Grand Prix held at Estoril, where it finished 9th.
Presented in its Footworks-Arrows livery, this A11B is a wonderful vintage Formula 1 example. It currently has no engine but retains the gearbox, so a Cosworth DFR could be fitted by the new owner. Offered with the car are copies of photos from the British Grand Prix, showing the car being prepared as well as Michele Alboreto behind the wheel.
