The Bentley Turbo R debuted in 1985 as the successor to the groundbreaking Mulsanne Turbo, a car that had already begun to rejuvenate the brand’s staid image in the early 1980s. No longer could these Bentley sedans be considered as mere re-grilled Rolls-Royce Silver Spirits. Thanks to the addition of a Garrett turbocharger to a massive 6.75-liter V-8, the Mulsanne Turbo became a true high performance offering from the once charismatic marque that built its reputation on a legendary string of victories at Le Mans.
While the raw power of the Mulsanne Turbo was quite impressive, it lacked in its road handling abilities. Unfortunately the engineering department at Rolls-Royce at that time was more concerned with ride quality and preferred soft springing which did little to enhance a more sporting type of driving experience. With the Turbo R, Bentley effectively addressed these deficiencies. In fact the ‘R’ in the new model’s name stood for “roadholding.”
The Turbo R not only featured the “definitive handling pack” with a stiffer suspension all around, but also (for the first time on a Bentley), alloy wheels with wider Pirelli tires that all contributed to an altogether more stable and capable chassis. Additionally the drivetrain was upgraded with Bosch electronic fuel injection, a digital ignition system and an air-to-air intercooler increasing the car’s peak horsepower to well over 300. And even with all of these technical improvements the Bentley Turbo R managed to maintain its classic appearance. It combines all of the luxury one would expect from the similar Rolls-Royce with the blistering performance of a true sport saloon that could only wear the Bentley label.
If you are looking for a super low miles example that has been collecting dust in a garage, this car is not for you. With over 100,000 proudly recorded miles (title exempt), this has been a car used for its intended purpose of delivering its driver and occupants quickly and safely to its intended destination. It has been wet, it has been hot and it has been cold, but it always has had a secure place in its current long-term owner’s garage at night. Many records, including production records and owners handbooks are included with the sale.
The car being offered here comes from a Bentley collector who fully appreciated its qualities on the road and benefits from always being serviced by a marque specialist. It will make the perfect car for someone who not only wants to get somewhere quickly and comfortably, but also wants to make a statement when he or she arrives.
