The R107 Mercedes-Benz 450SL was first sold in the United States in 1973 and featured “small early U.S. spec bumpers with twin sealed beam headlights.” The new 450SL was larger, heavier and consumed more fuel than its predecessor. The added weight and size was attributed to the ever-increasing U.S. government demands on safety regulations; this platform was, and remains well known for its crashworthiness. Like the previous SL offering, this car has a standard removable hardtop that is easily removed and stowed. The canvas soft-top is hidden away under a hard tonneau cover that locks and unlocks with the ease of the same tool used for fixing the hardtop in place.

In period, when you saw this model of Mercedes-Benz in movies and on television, the 450SL was shorthand for people who had “arrived.” They were often portrayed pulling up to the finest restaurants and shops, or driving down palm-lined boulevards. Its solid reputation translates to the driving experience; at speed the car is light on its feet and well controlled, plus the firm seats are wonderful on long trips.

This particular 450SL is reported as being delivered new on May 21, 1973 by Arcure Motors in Ann Arbor, Michigan where it has remained its entire existence and continues to be in excellent condition. It was sold to the second owner on March 21, 1975 and was cared for and appreciated by this individual until 2015. It is stated to be the “very rare small bumper U.S.A. market car with factory air conditioning.” Air conditioning is listed in factory literature as being a standard with this model.

Along with the steady 4.5-liter V-8 engine the car is equipped with many factory standards such as power windows, burl-wood accents and the indestructible MB-Tex interior. The canvas top appears to be original and remains in sound, excellent condition, as is the factory hardtop. The Mercedes features an upgraded Blaupunkt Charlotte cassette player, original tool roll, original owner’s manual and service book with metal plate. Recent service included new tires, brake lines and fluid changes.
