The BMW 2002 Turbo debuted at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. At the show, the car was finished in white with fender flares and colorful striping, making it easy to spot. The 1973 model had ‘turbo 2002’ in reverse script on the front spoiler, so drivers in front of this car knew what they were dealing with, but was removed shortly after because of criticism from observers as being too aggressive.
The turbocharged engine delivered an impressive 170-hp, sprinting the car to 60-mph in 7-seconds. The car was in production from 1973-1974 putting this car in the history books as BMW’s and Europe’s first turbo production car, and just a limited 1,672 cars would fall into the public’s hands. It is said that the discontinuance of this car was attributed to the 1970’s oil crisis.
This is an extremely rare BMW 2002 Turbo finished in a lovely silver metallic paint. The exterior retains the colorful lines, highlighting the turbo powered engine and very straight trim. The car is rolling on lovely wheels with very good radial tires. The outside of the vehicle is missing the rear spoiler. Under the bonnet is an inline-four cylinder that has added power from a turbocharger. The engine is married to a floor shift, manual gear box. The interior is tailored with a clock, black carpet, leather front bucket seats and rear seating that shows some wear.
This car is a lovely example of a rare European sports car that made history with its unique styling, and drivetrain.
