In period, the Malibu was traditionally Chevelle’s most popular series. All five body styles in this model had a revised look for 1968; each showing a distinctive roofline. The design was modern from roof to road. Every line and curve was clean and compatible for a modern uncluttered look that is still desirable today.
This Matador Red car is equipped with an uncommon (for this model) 327 cubic inch, 250 horsepower engine with factory installed dual exhaust. This unit is paired to a desirable four-speed transmission and Posi-traction rear end. The owner believes that the Malibu is running with its correct factory drivetrain. The black interior and soft-top provide a very nice and complementary contrast to the vibrant red for just the right look. For 1968, the glass rear window in the convertible top was now a standard feature.
This car was purchased new in 1968 at Gibson Chevrolet Company, Inc. in Amherst, Massachusetts by a customer who used the Chevelle Malibu as a daily driver. It had a frame-off restoration in 1981 by the original owner and was then used occasionally for car shows and kept in a heated garage until it was sold by the original owner in 2008. The next owner was a friend of the original owner, and since he spent many fun days in this car growing up, he added it to his Mopar collection.
The current owner bought the car in 2010 and has used it in Florida during the winter months, and stored in a climate controlled area in Pennsylvania during the summer months. The present owner has a collection of about 30 cars and all are maintained to the highest standards and can be driven anywhere. The current owner is a journeyman machinist and operates machining operations that employ nearly 200 people, so his demands for perfection are clearly evident in this car.
Accompanying the Chevrolet are its Protect-O-Plate, vehicle invoice and dealer order form and show that this car has the optional four-speed, radio, power top, 250-hp V-8 engine, dual exhaust, electric clock, power steering, plus optional wheels and tires. These are represented by the Rally wheels with redline tires and add a great deal to the overall presentation. The original radio has been replaced with a modern AM/FM cassette player linked to a 10-disc CD player hidden in the trunk.
This Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Convertible is reported to drive straight, stop straight and can be driven anywhere without concern. It would be a perfect car to drive and enjoy in the Route 66 Great Race this year, or any future races of similar origin and, of course, car shows.
