In the great tradition of the world's oldest, most experienced manufacturer of fine motorcars, the Grand Mercedes established new and higher standards than ever seen in automotive engineering and excellence. Peerless in performance, this noble car incorporates every conceivable feature important to passenger comfort and safety. It is the ultimate automobile in luxury, elegance and technical perfection, designed for the elite among the world's most discriminating and influential people.
The Mercedes-Benz 600 was first introduced in 1963. A full generation after it was first produced, the Mercedes-Benz 600 remains an unqualified engineering and stylistic masterpiece, as exclusive and visually imposing as ever. Powered by a 6.3-litre, 300-hp V-8 engine with aluminum cylinder heads and Bosch fuel-injection, the 600 featured a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment and delivered prodigious acceleration and high-speed cruising capabilities. A comprehensive hydraulic and pneumatic system powered the self-leveling suspension, assisted the brakes, helped open the massive doors and smoothly and silently operated the seats, trunk, sunroof and windows. With Mercedes’ characteristic attention to detail, each 600 was essentially custom-built. It was available from the factory in both 3,200-mm (126-inches) and 3,900-mm (153.3-inches) wheelbases, the latter of which was available in four- and six-door form, as well as a Landaulet.
This example is the only Grand 600 that has been professionally converted to a stretch limousine and this is documented in the German-language book “Mercedes-Benz 600” by Michael Wiedmaier. This is a 490 page tome that was published in March, 2008 and covers this particular car in Part III on pages 241 to 246 in the chapter titled “Die 600-Strechlimousine”. To give an idea of the length that this car has grown to, and keeping the 3,200-mm (SWB) and 3,900-mm (LWB) wheelbase dimensions of the factory specifications in mind, this Grand 600 has a 4,876.8-mm (192-inches) wheelbase with an overall length of 7,023.1-mm (276.5-inches). Massive, no matter which form of dimension you should choose. A numbered copy of Mr. Wiedmaier’s book, signed by the author, will accompany the car in the sales transaction.
This car is reported as originally being delivered to Mercedes-Benz of Toronto Ontario, Canada and presented in color code 387, Blue Metallic. During the ensuing years, this Pullman had been purchased by a Middle Eastern gentleman who commissioned the 600 to be stretched approximately 60-inches and the interior converted. A divider was placed and a six-line soda vending dispenser was installed in the trunk. The interior seating arrangement was changed to a design that featured sofa-like upholstery.
In 2003, this Grand 600 was acquired by a young couple in Washington D.C. with the intent to utilize the car in a future restaurant and health club operation, knowing that it would be a valuable asset for any corporation or business enterprise to have when special transportation arrangements are desired or required. They commissioned Classic Car Restoration to strip the interior of the car and start from scratch to restore the interior and seating back to original Mercedes-Benz design. This beautiful luxury auto has undergone a total restoration by restorer Karl Middelhauve. Correspondence between parties shows that this process alone cost $236,462.16; excluding the couple’s original purchase price of the previously stretched 600.
Comprehensively restored, this Pullman has received many new and properly refurbished components that include a computerized fuel management system that is reported to provide 20-percent more power with 22-percent better fuel mileage, oil-filled engine mounts that reduce abrasion, stainless steel exhaust system, hydraulic kit in the trunk, both front fenders replaced, complete rebuild of the front axle with MB140-type engine mounts, complete rear axle rebuild, total engine rebuild with all auxiliaries, sheetmetal stripped to bare metal and finished with “show quality” MB180 Silver Metallic, all five wheels bead-blasted and powdercoated, new Michelin extra-load tires, exterior brightwork and bumpers rechromed, interior wood trim is restored with new polyester finish, new blue carpets and leather on seats, panels and dash, air conditioning system with an upgraded Sanden compressor and additional blower installation for the rear compartment, Becker iPod and tri-axial speakers, new antenna, plus complete hydraulics system rebuild.
Additionally there has been a complete hydraulic system rebuild, all instrumentation has been cleaned and serviced, new front and rear window glass, new seats, new window channel and window brush, new door seals and new trunk seals. The car has its spare tire, jack, tools, emergency kit, owner’s manual, Mercedes-Benz computer card, dealer documented photo book and the restoration invoices.
Introduced in 1963, the Type 600 was produced until 1981. It has long been considered the epitome of stately elegance. Legendary Mercedes-Benz engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut stated, “We tried to combine a very good boulevard ride in an automobile that could also be driven in a sporty way.” In factory tests this type of limousine topped 120-mph. Ownership means you will always travel in a respected style with sophistication. From 1964-1981 only 2,677 were built in many variants.
A full generation after it was built, the Mercedes-Benz 600 remains an engineering and stylistic masterpiece, as exclusive and visually imposing as ever. The Pullman name is said to be in homage to the grand railroad cars built by Pullman in the days when incomparable travel amenities were derived from the “iron horses.” The Mercedes-Benz 600 was a favorite of the world’s wealthy and well-connected, used by everyone from Elvis Presley to the Pope. The Star and Laurel were impressively represented with the ultimate “Grand Mercedes.” This car represents an ideal Grand 600 Mercedes-Benz for VIP transport, weddings and special passage.
