Unveiled just one month after the 190SL ceased production, the 230SL reflected the sporting attributes of its predecessors with the comfort of a proper grand tourer. Bored over and benefiting from multi-point fuel injection, its 2.3-litre powerplant produced an additional 30-hp over the 220 SE engine from which it was derived. Although the subsequent 250 and 280SLs benefited from greater displacement, for pure handling ability, the 230 SL is regarded as the most nimble and enjoyable to drive, as it was also the lightest. The large grille with center-mounted star paid homage to the SLs of years past, while the pagoda-shaped roofline made for a unique design cue – and an enduring nickname.
This handsomely finished beige with saddle tan interior example is rust-free and has recently received a freshened undercarriage. This soft top 230SL also has a factory Becker radio and automatic transmission.
