This gracefully-styled 1948 Cadillac convertible was highly regarded for its striking beauty and mechanical strengths when new, and its solid reputation continues today. The upscale Series 62 featured interior and exterior fittings and trim upgraded over the entry-level 61, and it was instantly recognizable by its stone shields and subtle tailfins. These 1948 models were the last to receive Cadillac’s stout 346-cid, 150-hp flathead V-8 engine, noted for its exceptional smoothness and durability, as is its Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission. This car has been in a private collection for the past 20 years and has been maintained in an excellent manner in a climate controlled setting.

The example offered here represents an excellent older restoration and is resplendent with its red exterior finish, matching leather upholstery, matching carpet and a tan convertible top. Desirable features include a radio as well as hydraulically-operated top and windows that were standard equipment on the Series 62 convertible. A new pump ensures perfect function of the top and window assists. Along with a distinctive grille and brightwork, the “Sombrero” full wheel covers are used all around, and the chrome is reported to be in “like new” condition. This stylish detail component quickly became a favorite of early customizers and hot rodders, as well as Cadillac owners, remaining on the division’s parts list well into the 1950s.

As striking today as when it was originally unveiled in 1948, this Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe continues to exemplify one of the finest expressions of Harley Earl’s designs. Their excellent driving manners, performance and comfort make them very enjoyable touring cars today. This remarkable example will make a wonderful addition to any collection of the most significant and stylish postwar American automobiles.

The production of 6,755 Series 62 Convertible models helped Cadillac post total sales of 61,926 units for 1947, with the GM Division now surpassing Packard as America’s best-selling luxury marque by nearly 11,000 units.
