The 1948 Mercury's were very similar in design to the 1947 models; some have even forwarded the thought that they are virtually the same car. The Mercury was powered by a 239.4-cid L-head V-8 engine capable of producing 100 horsepower. A three-speed manual was standard and there were four body styles to select from: a station wagon, town sedan, sedan coupe and convertible coupe, like this exceptionally restored example. In the era, pricing began at $1,650 and went to $2,200 for the eight-passenger station wagon. The model 89M, body style number 76 platform was built for about 1.5 years and nearly 18,000 constructed; sources indicate 7,586 were 1948 models.
Everything on this lovely example is stated as “fresh as can be, including the top, interior and wood." The Mercury has undergone a complete rotisserie, nut-and-bolt restoration in a painstakingly executed multi-year project. The Mercury is finished in Malaga Red with the correct LeBaron Bonney interior and cloth power top. This tidy presentation extends to the engine compartment, interior and trunk. Amongst the equipment is a cabin heater, dual exhaust, period radio, clock, faux woodgrain dash accents, spare, whitewall tires and color-keyed steel wheels with factory caps and trims. Very few miles have been driven since the restoration, and the long term owner also has many tens of thousands of dollars worth of receipts documenting the process.
Not often seen, but greatly appreciated, this would be a well-received automobile at AACA events, and very welcoming for most jaunts.
