In 1964, 14,173 220SEb’s were produced; this particular one being a factory two-door hardtop. This vehicle was among the last of an era of hand-built cars by Mercedes-Benz in Germany. The cabriolet and coupé versions were some of the most desirable, which were hand-built at Sindelfingen and correspondingly quite expensive. They were built on a shorter wheelbase than the saloon, their monocoque bodies were crafted in steel, with certain parts in aluminum to save weight, and the cabriolet’s floor was heavily reinforced to make up for the loss of a roof. Both were finished with the same quality standards of the top-line 300 class, this was reflected with their hand-built construction.

Under the bonnet of this car is a 2.2–liter single overhead cam, six-cylinder engine equipped with Bosch indirect fuel injection. The SEb includes independent front suspension by unequal length A-arms, coil springs, sway bar, single low-pivot swing axles with trailing arms, and front disc and rear drum hydraulic brakes. The engine is coupled to a smooth MBZ four-speed manual transmission, which has had a new clutch professionally installed. Also, the front of the radiator still retains its correctly mounted Mercedes-Benz radiator shroud support data and VIN plates.

The interior of this vehicle has been refinished by marque specialist, George, at MBZ Motors. The hand-polished wood and thick tan leather is a good contrast to its Bordeaux Red exterior. The speedometer is measured in kilometers and the interior is also fitted with a factory Becker radio with an optional factory amplifier and clock.
