The original W113 design was the 230SL; it was introduced in 1963 with crisp, angular Paul Bracq styling. The original 150 horsepower six-cylinder engine grew in size over the decade, with the ultimate model being the 280SL with the 180 horsepower, 2.8-liter engine, introduced in 1968 and built through 1971. The 280SL was the most popular W113, accounting for 23,885 cars. This particular vehicle is equipped with the 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine coupled to a five-speed manual transmission.
The lightest of the SL’s weighed in at a hefty 2,800 pounds, as engine displacement increased, so too did straight-line performance. As a result, the most popular of the SL’s (from the German “sports leight” or “light sports”) was the 280SL. Fast, comfortable and stylish, they seemed to be the ideal personal sports car to many. Sadly, 1971 would prove to be the final year for this edition of the SL.
The sleek design and quality performance makes this Mercedes-Benz quite a desirable automobile. A wide front grille and smooth bodylines accentuates the white paint very well, the convertible top and luxurious green interior are a perfect contrast to the exterior. The odometer shows a mere 37,460 miles which the current owner believes is original to the car.
This Roadster is often regarded to be the perfect car to enjoy the road with. Driving is looked at as a task nowadays, but this vehicle will take you back to when operating an automobile was for personal enjoyment. Comfort and sophistication is what defines luxury and this 280SL has plenty of both.
