In 1966, the limited production Catalina 2+2 was in its third year and in a separate series for this model year. Its wonderful Wide-Track made it the car to go touring. It was billed as a personal performance car with plenty of get-up-and-go, plus all of the room, comfort and appointments of a luxury passenger car. It was found in the special GTO/2+2 performance catalog at the dealer and blended heavy-duty suspension, special springs, shocks and a high performance axle ratio as standards, as well as dashing pinstriping that accentuates the long, low lines of the convertible design. The 2+2 was also offered in a two-door hardtop. The car also featured (as standards) bucket seats and can be readily identified by appearance items such as a twin lens taillight treatment, 2+2 badges on the rear flanks, vertical air slots behind the doors and “Pontiac 421” front fender emblems. The standard engine spec was a 421-cid, 338-hp V-8 with a four-barrel carburetor, low-restriction exhaust, chromed valve covers and chromed air cleaner. A Tri-power option was available from the factory.
The engine that powers this example is one of many reasons to give this machine serious consideration. This car has been upgraded with the optional Tri-power carburetor setup, which is reported to be properly date-coded. With only 6,383 total 1966 2+2’s being built; this is obviously a very scarce model. This car is Pontiac Historical Services documented and is a two-owner car that has received a complete frame-on restoration. Not only have the cosmetics been attended to, the car has undergone a complete rebuild of the engine, transmission, rear end, suspension and steering components. This has resulted in the car being stated to “look better than new.”
Among the other features on this Pontiac is a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, Safe-T-Track differential, bucket seats with center console, tilt steering wheel, factory eight-lug wheels; power windows, driver’s seat, steering and brakes. Along with the aforementioned PHS documentation the Catalina 2+2 has its Protect-O-Plate and all original owner’s booklets.
