As soon as the revolutionary type-993 Porsche 911 Carrera was introduced for the 1994 model year, enthusiasts were clamoring for a Turbo version. The anticipation would persist until 1995, when the new 911 Turbo Coupé was unveiled as a 1996 model.

Though it was part of the last generation of the 911 to feature an air-cooled flat-six engine, the type-993 was the first 911 Turbo with all-wheel drive and the first variant equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Its 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six was a detuned version of the engine used in the rear-wheel-drive, track-focused 911 GT2 and produced 402 brake horsepower.

A Werksleistungssteigerung (“factory performance increase”) option package, “WLS 1” for short, used remapped engine management software and higher boost pressure to achieve 424 brake horsepower. Those and other upgrades would come standard on the 911 Turbo S launched for the 1997 model year. A subsequent “WLS 2” package took things even further, employing larger KKK K24 turbochargers to boost output to 444 brake horsepower, on par with the 911 GT2.

The 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo offered here features the rare and highly desirable WLS 2 upgrade. With a production date of 19 March 1996, it was sold to its first owner at Porsche Center Limburg in Germany. The same dealer would then sell the car to its next owner, a resident of Weilburg, Germany, in November of 1997. Service invoices on file indicate that in late 1999, the second owner would commission Porsche Center of Limburg to perform the WLS 2 upgrade at a cost of nearly 20,000 Deutsche Marks. This same owner would go on to enjoy the car for 18 years, until it joined The Carrera Collection in 2015.

To this day, the car wears its factory-correct color combination of Black Metallic over Black Leather and rides on correct, hollow-spoke wheels. It came well equipped from the factory with optional heated front seats with lumbar support, Becker Porsche CR-31 stereo with cassette player, Becker Porsche CDC-3 six-disc CD changer, Nokia DSP audio system, cruise control, sunroof, raised brake light, and Motorola international 2200 GSM telephone.

Sparingly driven under the past eight years of ownership and well-documented with numerous service invoices, stamped maintenance booklet, and German inspection reports, this exceptional Turbo 911 Coupé clearly has been well cared for throughout its entire life. The odometer reads 77,446 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. With fewer than 6,000 type-993 911 Turbo coupés produced from 1996 to 1998, it is rare to begin with; having been upgraded with the factory WLS 2 package makes it exceedingly so and among the most coveted of all air-cooled Porsche 911s.

Oltre ad appartenere all’ultima generazione di 911 con motore sei cilindri “piatto” raffreddato ad aria, la variante 993 era anche la prima 911 Turbo a trazione integrale e la prima dotata di cambio manuale a sei marce. Il suo sei cilindri “piatto” da 3,6 litri biturbo era una versione depotenziata del propulsore montato sulla sportiva 911 GT2 a trazione posteriore ed erogante 408 CV.

Il pacchetto opzionale “WLS 1” o Werksleistungssteigerung, che significa incremento delle prestazioni di fabbrica, impiegava un software di gestione del motore con diversa mappatura e una maggiore pressione di sovralimentazione per ottenere 430 CV. Questi e altri aggiornamenti sarebbero poi stati inclusi nella dotazione di serie con l’introduzione della 911 Turbo S nel 1997. Il nuovo pacchetto “WLS 2” compiva un ulteriore passo avanti grazie a turbocompressori KKK K24 maggiorati che portavano la potenza complessiva a 450 CV, alla pari della 911 GT2.

La Porsche 911 Turbo del 1996 qui proposta è dotata del raro e altamente desiderabile pacchetto “WLS 2”. Ultimata il 19 marzo 1996, fu venduta al primo proprietario tramite la concessionaria Porsche Zentrum Limburg in Germania. Fu poi rivenduta dalla stessa concessionaria al successivo proprietario di Weilburg, sempre in Germania, nel novembre 1997. Le fatture disponibili nel faldone riportano che verso la fine del 1999 il secondo proprietario incaricò Porsche Zentrum di montare il pacchetto “WLS 2” per un totale di 20.000 marchi tedeschi. La vettura rimase di sua proprietà per 18 anni fino al 2015, quando è entrata nella Carrera Collection.

A tutt’oggi è verniciata nel colore originale nero metallizzato con interni in pelle neri e monta i cerchi a razze cave originali. Ha una ricca dotazione di fabbrica che include sedili anteriori riscaldati con sostegno lombare disponibili in opzione, stereo Becker Porsche CR-31 con lettore di cassette, caricatore da sei CD Becker Porsche CDC-3, impianto audio Nokia DSP, cruise control, tetto apribile, luce dei freni rialzata e telefono GSM Motorola International 2200.

Guidata sporadicamente negli ultimi otto anni e completa di documentazione esaustiva e numerose fatture degli interventi effettuati, libretto dei tagliandi e rapporti di ispezione in tedesco, questa eccezionale Turbo 911 Coupé è stata amata e accudita con estrema cura per tutta la sua vita. Segnava 77.446 chilometri al momento dell’inserimento a catalogo. Con meno di 6.000 911 Turbo Coupé tipo 993 prodotte tra il 1996 e il 1998, questo raro esemplare ha un alto valore collezionistico, reso ancor più elevato grazie alla presenza del pacchetto “WLS 2” di fabbrica e al fatto di essere una delle Porsche 911 raffreddate ad aria più ambite di sempre.
