Mercedes-Benz’s elegant Paul Bracq–designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced, in a great variety of body styles and powertrain configurations until 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the premium two-door models—the 280 SE Cabriolet and Coupé.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, these cars rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising around the world’s most lavish destinations.
Replacing the 250 SE in November 1967, the 280 SE was powered by the new 2.8-litre M130 inline six-cylinder engine. This new model featured minor revisions such as a one-piece hubcap, new door mirrors, unique door-lock buttons, variable heater levels, and the option of a wood-veneer dashboard. The new 158 brake horsepower engine provided performance improvements over the 250 SE, with 0 to 100 km/h times recorded at 13 seconds for vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox.
An accompanying copy of its factory data card shows that this handsome, US-market 280 SE Cabriolet was delivered new on 20 February 1969 and equipped with a column-shift automatic transmission, a Becker Mexico TR radio, single seats with front folding armrests, lap belts, safety headrests, manual windows, heat-insulating glass, and standard disc wheels wrapped in radial whitewall tyres.
As presented today it remains finished in its breathtaking, factory-correct colour scheme of Black over Dark Green leather beneath a Light Grey fabric soft-top. Correspondence on file notes that the car was reportedly retained by the family of its original owner until 2008, when it was acquired by an enthusiast in Minnesota and treated to a sympathetic restoration, which seems to have included a mix of cosmetic and mechanical work. At that time, the state of this 280 SE was recorded as notably original, particularly in reference to its interior condition. From there, it subsequently moved to a collection in Texas, before its purchase by The Carrera Collection from a southern California broker in late 2012. Upon arrival in continental Europe, this 280 SE was submitted to marque specialist Jürgen Kassen of Örlinghausen for general improvements and body repairs as required in several areas of the car’s highly original state.
A wonderful tour and show car thanks to its quality and usability, this Mercedes-Benz present a splendid opportunity to acquire an example of the marque’s final hand-built automobile—a true paradigm of craftsmanship, style, and engineering.
