The relationship between Shelby American and the Hertz rental car company dates back to the 1960s when the newly introduced Mustang GT 350 was offered to clients in the popular “Rent-A-Racer” program. This program has been revived in the Hertz Fun Collection program, which offers a modern version of the GT 350-H, also produced by Shelby’s performance specialists. This 2007 example is one of 500 such Hertz Convertibles produced.
The Hertz Shelby GT-H Convertible is basically the mechanical twin of the GT-H coupe, being driven by a 4.6-liter, 320-hp V-8 engine. Changes for the convertible, aside from the obvious power folding top, include a rollbar and black-painted 18-inch "Bullitt"-style five-spoke wheels, as first seen on the black Shelby GT customer cars. Other features are carried over from the GT-H coupe, such as the instantly recognizable black-and-gold paint/stripe scheme with both center and “Le Mans”-style side stripes, Hertz badging on the front fenders, horizontally-oriented aluminum grille and an automatic transmission. Additional features include hood pins, front and rear spoilers, air conditioning; power top, windows, seats, door locks, mirrors, steering and four-wheel disc brakes. As was the case with the closed-roof GT-H, only 500 were built.
This exciting example has been well-cared-for and is reported to be sparingly driven over its eight year life. It has been well-maintained and remains in excellent condition. It comes complete with the Shaker 500 sound system with an in-dash AM/FM radio with six-disc in-dash CD player.
