Clean-cut and polished in front of a camera, Jeff Gordon helped transform NASCAR racing from a regional spectacle into a mainstream sport. Gordon became the youngest driver to triumph at the Daytona 500 in 1997 and tied a modern record with 13 victories in one season in 1998, finishing both years as the series champion. He notched a fourth championship in 2001, culminating an amazing stretch that produced 56 victories in seven years. Finally retiring in 2016 after finishing his record 805th race, Gordon was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019—during his first year of eligibility, of course.

Completed by Hendrick Motorsports on 30 September 2002, chassis HMS-09-02-259 is a Superspeedway-specification car which Gordon used in seven races between 2003 and 2006. Most notably, he competed with this car three times at Daytona International Speedway’s season-opening Budweiser Shootout race. He finished within the top 10 each time, with a best finish of 3rd place at the 2005 edition.

Since its 2006 retirement, it has been fastidiously and authentically restored by Hendrick Motorsports' own acclaimed Certified Race Cars program with the collector in mind. Chassis 259 is presented today wearing its period-correct DuPont “hot-rod flame” #24 livery from the 2006 NASCAR season. Furthermore, the hood has been signed by the entire team responsible for its restoration at Hendrick Motorsports, and it is also the first chassis listed in the company’s registry of restored Jeff Gordon-used cars.

Chassis 259 is currently powered by a raced-and-rebuilt, 358-cubic-inch Hendrick “SB2” V-8 NASCAR engine paired with a Tex Racing four-speed transmission. Putting all 830 horsepower down to the pavement is a set of 15-inch Aero wheels wrapped in Goodyear Racing tires, and a nine-inch rear axle with locking differential. The Hendrick-designed heavy-duty suspension and race-spec braking system were both built to handle the rigors of the most demanding NASCAR circuits. In December 2021, 259 received approximately $5,500 of servicing from Hendrick’s dedicated team—including four new race tires, as well as an oil tank heater, and clutch master cylinder.

Chassis 259 is accompanied by a trove of Hendrick Race Car Registry documentation, including build records, a certificate of authenticity, logbook, and service invoices.

As the main honoree of the 2023 Amelia Concours, the week-long schedule of events celebrating Gordon’s NASCAR achievements will do much to excite all interested parties, but only one of them will get to carry that excitement—and this podium-earning racecar—all the way back home.
