When the sixth-generation code S550 Mustang released for the 2015 model year, it represented a massive technical leap forward for the famed pony car thanks to the adoption of a new-from-the-ground-up platform with independent rear suspension and the formidable Coyote V-8 underhood. These developments offered tuners the opportunity to create even more powerful iterations of the beloved Mustang.
But a partnership between Galpin Auto Sports and legendary automotive designer Henrik Fisker, the man responsible for the BMW Z8, envisioned something even greater: The Galpin Rocket. With a fully restyled wide body constructed predominantly out of carbon fiber and a 750-horsepower supercharged V-8 engine under the hood, the Rocket intended to take on supercars as the most potent muscle car of the 21st century.
Naturally, the next step in this project would lead to the development of an open-top version of the Rocket. At the prestigious 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California, the Mustang Rocket Speedster debuted on the famed Concept Lawn adjacent to the pro shop. Upon its reveal, Beau Boeckmann, president of Galpin Motors, remarked, “This Speedster Concept has added another layer of style to the car without losing an ounce of the incredible beauty of the coupe. It really has been a dream collaboration, combining Henrik’s design execution with the performance and customization expertise of the Galpin Auto Sports team.”
While this open-top Rocket shared many of the same design elements of the coupe, including the hexagonal grille, twin hood nostrils, sculpted fender flares, side intakes to feed the Brembo Gran Turismo brakes, and a ducktail rear spoiler, the Speedster adopts a unique rear panel with vented fairings to create a dramatic two-seater appearance. The design of the 21-inch wheels provides a modern interpretation of the popular vintage mag wheels made by American Racing and neatly fills the wheel arches to provide an aggressive stance. Fittingly, the vehicle is coated in a deep metallic cherry red finish which harkens back to customs of the 1960s and 1970s, and the interior offers a nice complement, with bright red leather and black Alcantara center strips along the seats.
Since its completion, the Galpin Rocket Speedster has remained in the care of its creator and has only logged 3,131 miles at the time of cataloging. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an individual to become the first private owner of this one-of-a-kind machine.
