Big news in 1967 was the introduction of the all-new Camaro—Chevrolet’s answer, albeit two-and-a-half years late, to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. Based on the same long hood, short deck style of the Mustang, the two literally matched each other feature-for-feature and option-to-option. Like the Mustang, which owed its origins to the compact Falcon, the Camaro had its roots in the compact Chevy II Nova, with which it shared many components.

Chevrolet celebrated the all-new offering by pacing the 1967 Indianapolis 500. 103 cars were built for track and dignitary use race weekend and another 200 sent to dealers as replicas available to the buying public. All pace cars were finished in Ermine White with a matching convertible top over a bright blue custom interior with white accents. This example, one of the 200 pace car replicas, was produced in Norwood, Ohio on 12 April 1967 and sent to Van’s Chevrolet of New Castle, Delaware per the NCRS shipping report on file.

The consignor describes it as a numbers-matching engine example that benefits from a rotisserie restoration to original specifications. Per the original trim tag and vehicle identification number, it is equipped with the 295-horsepower, 350-cubic-inch L48 V-8 engine and four-speed manual transmission, power steering, power brakes, tinted glass, and AM radio.

This Camaro has both the RS and SS packages along with proper pace car lettering to commemorate the 51st running of the Indianapolis 500 Race on 30 May 1967 and proper red line tires on classic Chevrolet rally wheels. The consignor adds that it is a very nicely restored car that presents beautifully, and it is as nicely detailed underhood and underneath as it is on the exterior and interior. A tribute to the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, this Indianapolis 500 pace car replica would also be an ideal acquisition for a collector of noteworthy Chevrolets or American pony cars.
