Prior to its public launch on Edsel Day – 4 September 1957 – the Edsel was the most eagerly awaited new make of car in American history. Ford set up an entirely new sales and marketing organization, built a new factory in Kentucky, and signed up over 1,000 dealers in advance of production, and hyped the car far and wide, including running Edsel ads on all four major television networks at the same time. One of those much-awaited new Edsels was this Pacer convertible, one of just 1,876 produced. A well-presented older restoration in Turquoise and Snow White with a matching interior, its original factory color scheme, it has been one of the centerpieces of Jim and Carolyn Popp’s collection, The Shrine of the Holy Grille. Today it records 55,106 miles at the time of cataloguing. Accessories include the Teletouch automatic transmission (shifted by push-buttons in the steering wheel hub), dual spotlights, and a “continental kit” spare. This would be one of the highlights of any 1950s Ford collection.
