The 911 GT3 RS was produced as a street-legal model to comply with the homologation rules of the various sanctioning bodies such as the SCCA, IMSA, and Grand Am, in which it actively campaigned in the GT class. The GT3 RS is a seven-time championship class winner in the American Le Mans Series and has placed 1st-overall at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The GT3 RS is more than just a warmed-up 911. It occupies a focused niche in the model lineup and features a number of specialized parts.

The engine block is referred to as the “Mezger” engine—named after its designer Hans Mezger. This is a motorsports-derived engine and is distinctly different than the one used in the other standard 997 generation-one models.
