At slightly over 6,000 built, the Aerocoupe was a rare sight, even when new. This example features Silver Metallic exterior with a dark gray cloth interior and glass T-tops. It is powered by the venerable 5.0-liter Chevy small-block V-8 rated at 180 horsepower and backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. The Monte Carlo being offered has approximately 65,000 miles displayed on the odometer.
A two year only offering, the Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe was introduced the year before as a way to improve the aerodynamics of the regular Monte Carlo bodystyle that Chevrolet was using in NASCAR. By taking a Monte Carlo SS and grafting a longer rear glass onto the body along with a shorter rear deck lid and revised rear spoiler, Chevrolet was able to keep its cars in the winner’s circle by reducing the drag coefficient to gain speed.
