Completed by Porsche in February of 1973, the Carrera RS 2.7 offered here was built to touring specifications and sold new to Luxembourg, one of only three such cars to be delivered there. One of eighty-seven cars finished in Porsche’s iconic shade of Signal Yellow, the interior was fitted with the leatherette interior and the car’s only factory option was the fitment of headrests to both the driver’s and passenger’s seats.

In 1982, the car was acquired by a Mr. Bataille from Hyères, a Mediterranean coastal town in the south of France and one year later, it was shipped from France to the United States. In September 1986, Thomas Slater traded the car to Santa Fe, New Mexico art dealer Malcolm Grimmer in exchange for an Indian Scout jacket and a Pletka painting. According to documentation in the history file, the car was very sound and damage free at the time, which was considered a bonus, as many RS Carreras in Europe were affected by rust. When the car came into the hands of Jon Bartell, a restoration was started in 1987. At that moment, the odometer showed 60,021 kilometres. The engine was rebuilt by Farmer Automotive in Indianapolis, Indiana. The chassis was stripped and repainted in its original Signal Yellow, and all nuts and bolts were replaced with new factory parts. The car was then reassembled by Blackburn and Daly, also in Indianapolis. Over the course of the following two decades, the car remained largely in static storage yet it was serviced on a regular basis.

The current owner acquired the car in 2015, and subsequently shipped it to The Netherlands, where it has remained ever since. Enjoyed sparingly in his care, a clear highlight of his decade-long ownership was shipping the car to Hainan, China to participate in the Hainan Open International classic car tour. A twelve-day tour, this would be the first event of its type on the beautiful island of Hainan, bringing over sixty classic cars to China’s southernmost province, an island known for its tropical climate and natural beauty. Returning safely to the Netherlands in early 2025, the car was fully serviced upon its return and today remains in wonderful condition both inside and out.

A recent inspection by Andy Prill of Prill Porsche Classics confirms that this Carrera RS retains its original chassis, engine, gearbox, and bodywork. His inspection determined that, like many Carrera RS’, this car has had some competition history, likely between 1973-1983 and evidence of a roll cage and racing harnesses fitted previously can be seen. Despite this, the car retains its original shell including original floors with all original reinforcements and remains a bona-fide Carrera RS 2.7 Touring.

Over fifty years since its introduction, the Carrera RS 2.7 stands proud as arguably Porsche’s most iconic automobile, one that can clearly trace its roots to the RS products of today. A staple of any world-class Porsche collection, these cars are just as exciting to drive now as they were when they were introduced, and this example would sit proudly alongside any of its more modern relatives.
