By 1966, the Chevelle SS 396 emerged as its own series, featuring sport coupes and convertibles with reinforced frames and enhanced front suspension. With a trio of 396-cubic-inch V8 engine options—ranging from 325 horsepower to 375 horsepower—the SS 396 quickly became a performance icon, lasting from 1966 to 1968 before transitioning to an option package in 1969.

Unquestionably one of the world’s finest Chevelles, this stunning 1966 SS 396 Convertible was originally delivered to R.W. Wiggins Chevrolet in Pequea, Pennsylvania, and delivered to its first owner, Kenneth H. Hess on 11 March 1966, according to the car’s accompanying warranty information booklet with original Protect-O-Plate. Little else is known of its history other than the car showcases a multi-year, rotisserie restoration by renowned restorer Doug Yoder, who retained it for his personal collection. Numerous photographs meticulously document the comprehensive process, which returned the car to factory condition, with 14 coats of primer, paint, and clear, a complete rebuild of its numbers-matching L35-code 396-cubic-inch V-8 engine, and numerous authentic details, including correctly dated glass and new old-stock shocks date-matched to the car’s original assembly.

Finished as it left the factory in Marina Blue over Black vinyl, the Chevelle is equipped with an impressive array of options, including power steering, power brakes, gauge package, tachometer, AM/FM radio, wood steering wheel, deluxe seat belts, and mag-style wheel covers on 14-inch steel wheels, all complemented by period-correct reproduction redline tires. Following its completion, the car earned an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior National First Prize in 2008 and a Senior Grand National First Prize in 2010. It was also named “Best Chevelle” by Super Chevy magazine in 2011 and 2013.

Acquired by Ron Jury from Doug Yoder in 2019, the car is accompanied by its original warranty booklet with Protect-O-Plate, a Certificate of Authenticity issued by marque expert Jerry MacNeish in 2024, photos of the restoration, and factory manuals.

Crafted by one of the most respected restorers in the industry and boasting an impressive list of accolades, this Chevelle SS 396 Convertible is a remarkable find for anyone seeking the best in restored Chevrolet muscle cars.
