In 1966, the all-new Chevrolet Chevy II delivered a razor-sharp restyle based on the Super Nova concept car. The proportions flowed much better than the earlier cars, while the overall dimensions were largely unchanged. The styling proved popular and interest in the top-tier Nova Super Sport spiked. Super Sports received all-vinyl interior trim with optional bucket seats, an electric clock, and SS trim.
Ultimately 20,986 Nova Super Sport two-door hardtop coupes passed through showrooms and onto American roads. Of those premium Nova SS models, only 5,481 were equipped with the legendary L79 V-8 engine, producing 350 horsepower from 327 cubic inches. The secret of the L79 Nova SS was a high power-to-weight ratio thanks to the car's smaller size. Furthermore, its subdued styling did not broadcast the 10-pounds-per-horsepower potency. With all that power and the ability to quickly rev near 6,000 rpm, the little Nova SS often surprised owners of cars with much larger engines.
This beautifully presented 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova SS L79, certified as authentic by marque expert Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance, was assembled in Norwood, Ohio, and was originally specified with a tinted windshield, rear antenna, four-speed manual transmission, bucket seats, deluxe seatbelts, as well as the Z01/Z13 “Comfort and Convenience” packages. Furthermore, this L79 was also furnished with option groups two, four, and five, along with a Tropic Turquoise exterior—very rare and desirable, according to MacNeish—over matching turquoise vinyl upholstery. Following its completion in late May 1966, it was delivered new to Beaty Chevrolet of Knoxville, Tennessee on 15 June 1966, and purchased new by one D.W. Wolfenbarger.
Under previous ownership, the car reportedly benefited from a comprehensive restoration completed in 2015. Leading up to the car’s restoration, MacNeish exhaustively reviewed the car’s components for originality and authenticity. His detailed report, published in 2013 and on file for review, substantiates this stunning car’s originality. He certified the car again in 2024, reaffirming its authenticity. As presented today in its factory-correct color combination, this Nova SS retains its original, numbers-matching L79 V-8 engine, Muncie M20 four-speed transmission, and 3.31:1 Positraction rear differential.
Since entering the esteemed collection of Ron and Sarah Jury in 2018, the car has been exhibited in Antique Automobile Club of America events, winning a Senior National First Prize and Grand National award in 2019. With verified originality, strong collectability, and beautifully restored in its very rare original Tropic Turquoise color, this is truly one of the most exceptional examples of the Nova SS to cross the auction block of late.
