Originally designed and built by Pininfarina, the 330 GT 2+2 Series I differed greatly from the preceding 250 GTE and the interim 330 America, as it was fitted with an unusual four-headlamp nose. The second-generation 330 GT 2+2 shown here, later dubbed the Series II, was introduced halfway through the 1965 model year. The most noticeable changes over the first generation were the replacement of the car’s quad headlights with a more subtle dual-headlight treatment, and a proper five-speed gearbox that replaced the previous model’s four-speed with overdrive.

Completed May 1966, chassis 8551 left Maranello finished in a spectacular combination of Verde Pino over a Rosso Connolly leather interior. One of just 474 Series II examples constructed, the car was factory equipped with Borrani wire wheels, power windows, and instruments in kilometers. The grand tourer was subsequently delivered to the official Ferrari importer of Germany, Auto-Becker of Düsseldorf, and sold to its first owner. The car would remain in Europe until 1971, when it was purchased by an American from Glen Arbor, Michigan. Its next owner enjoyed 8551 for almost 30 years, during which it was shown at numerous Ferrari Club of America meetings. The quality of this 330 GT was confirmed as it became the recipient of the “Most Authentic Interior” award. In 2014, the car found its fourth owner before arriving in the current caretaker’s garage in 2017.

In 2021, the consignor sent 8551 to Vintage Underground of Eugene, Oregon, for a well-documented, open-checkbook, show-quality full restoration. The work performed is detailed in a collection of invoices accompanied by a series of highly informative videos published on the shop’s YouTube page. During the restoration, it was determined the interior leather would still match the quality of the rest of the restoration and was therefore not replaced, even though new hides were ordered early in the process. The results of the work performed are truly stunning. Today, this 330 GT 2+2 Series II is certainly one of the finest available: Over $500,000 was invested in making 8551 a gleaming example. Since the completion of its restoration, 8551 has been consistently driven and further sorted. Work orders show the recent addition of a new fuel pump and alternator.

Sporting an exhilarating blend of Italian style, luxury, and power, the 330 GT 2+2 stands as a more practical alternative to the heady race-bred Ferraris of its time, offering similar driving drama and exhilaration in a package ideal for daily jaunts in town or long trips on the open road. There are not many Ferraris from this era that can seat four adults comfortably. This impressive European-delivery example, with its dazzling and rare color combination, is an excellent candidate for both touring or showing at a moment’s notice.
