The Fiat-SPA TL37 light artillery tractor entered production in 1937. Its design reflects the tactical thinking of the Italian military designers of the 1930s. The short wheelbase, high ground clearance and four-wheel steering features were considered necessary to address the mountainous terrain of the anticipated battlefields of northern Italy and southern Europe. The TL37 could be deployed with semi-pneumatic or pneumatic tires. Its 57-hp liquid-cooled engine drove all four wheels via a five-speed gearbox and lockable center differential. It had independent suspension with coil springs in the front and transverse leaf springs in the rear. A winch with 2.5-ton capacity was included along with ammunition stowage and seating for four. Its wheelbase was only 100-inches. SPA TL37s deployed to North Africa were often equipped with even larger tires resulting in very good cross-country capability. The light towing capacity limited the TL37 to only towing small caliber anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns. The SPA TL37 was also produced in an engineers and cargo truck version. A highly modified gun truck version was produced in 1943 for desert patrol use featuring machine guns and a 20-mm or 47-mm cannon. None of which accompany this vehicle.
