The most sought-after iteration of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is those final 209 cars produced to the ultimate specification, with the lighter alloy engine block and powerful disc brakes, creating a machine with superior balance and stopping power to earlier models. It is difficult to acquire such an example, even more so to find one that has been conscientiously preserved, never falling into disrepair or requiring anything more than good maintenance. This is one such fortunate car.

Chassis number 198.042.10.003148, the exceptional Light Blue (DB 334 G) 300 SL Roadster offered here, was purchased new by Roy L Seeger. The Kinnelon, New Jersey resident was a veteran of the Korean War and long-time pilot for Eastern Air Lines. During their European honeymoon, Mr Seeger and his new wife, Hedy, took “tourist delivery” of the car in Stuttgart, and proceeded to drive it around the continent before bringing it back with him to the United States. It remained in the couple’s ownership for a remarkable 34 years.

Only after Mr Seeger’s passing in 1996 was it acquired from his widow for the distinguished collection of its current owner. In corresponding with Mrs Seeger, the owner noted: “We are not planning to do a restoration on your car, rather a careful conservation, because everything is in an original condition. I would like to assure you that your car will receive very careful and loving treatment, and indeed that the car which obviously played a very important part in the lives of yourself and your late husband has gone to a good home where it continues to be appreciated.”

While kept in the consignor’s ownership in the United States, the Roadster was sensitively maintained by the noted Scott Grundfor Company of California. It is believed that at least part of the paint remains original, while the original Roser leather interior remains in remarkable condition for its age, with light and charming patina, and the removable hardtop is still mounted. The car is accompanied by its jack, an owner’s manual, service guide, and Becker radio instructions.

Very few extant 300 SL Roadsters have such a pristine history as this car, much less such amazing originality. Combined with known, brief ownership history and the sought-after disc brake and alloy block configuration, here is an outstanding example.

La straordinaria 300 SL Roadster color Light Blue (DB 334 G) con numero di telaio 198.042.10.003148 fu acquistata da nuova da Roy L. Seeger. Seeger abitava a Kinnelon, nello stato del New Jersey, ed era un veterano della guerra di Corea e pilota di lungo corso della Eastern Air Lines. Durante la sua luna di miele in Europa con la moglie Hedy si fece consegnare la vettura a Stoccarda e la guidò per tutto il continente prima di riportarla con sé negli Stati Uniti. Rimase proprietà della coppia per ben 34 anni.

Desidero assicurarle che la sua auto sarà trattata con riguardo e grande cura e che questa vettura che ha svolto un ruolo così importante nella sua vita e in quella del suo defunto marito è stata accolta in un luogo dove continuerà ad essere custodita e apprezzata con amore.”

Sotto la proprietà del conferente negli Stati Uniti la Roadster è stata sottoposta a una manutenzione attenta dalla celebre Scott Grundfor Company in California. Si ritiene che almeno una parte della verniciatura sia originale; gli interni in pelle Roser risultano in condizioni ottimali per la loro età, impreziositi da una leggera patina che ne esalta il fascino, e la vettura conserva il suo hard-top amovibile. L’esemplare è completo di cric originale, manuale d’uso e manutenzione e istruzioni per l’autoradio Becker.

Pochissime 300 SL Roadster ancora esistenti possono vantare una storia tanto lineare e immacolata come questa vettura, tantomeno un simile livello di originalità. È un esemplare assolutamente straordinario, grazie anche alla cronologia ben documentata e breve di proprietari e all’ambita configurazione con blocco motore in alluminio e freni a disco.
