Introduced in 1975 as the successor to the Dino 246, the 308 quickly won over many enthusiasts with both its looks and performance. Often associated with the TV show Magnum, P.I., the 308 GTS played a starring role in the series, capturing the imaginations of many as it chased down criminals on the islands of Hawaii with actor Tom Selleck behind the wheel.

The 308 shared both a version of its tube-frame platform and double-wishbone independent suspension with the Ferrari 308 GT4. Its 2,926-cubic-centimeter transversely mounted V-8 engine was rated at 240 horsepower and pushed the car to a claimed top speed of 250 km/h.

The 308 GTS entered production in 1977, two years after the 308 GTB debuted. The main difference between the two was that the GTS featured a removable roof panel. Ferrari made sure to reinforce the chassis to account for the missing roof, leaving the handling dynamics largely on par with the GTB. Removing the 308 GTS’s targa top is simple, and it easily stows directly behind the rear seats. The open-top 308 ultimately proved to be the more popular variant, with a total of 3,219 examples manufactured.

Believed to have been sold new through Harley E. Cluxton III’s Grand Touring Cars, Inc. of Phoenix, Arizona, this 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS features a spectacular Rosso Rubino exterior over a handsome tan leather interior. Moderately used over the years, just 24,790 miles showed on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. Notable amenities include air conditioning, power windows, and an Alpine CD player stereo. A tool kit and owner’s books will accompany the car upon sale.

This 308 GTS further benefits from having been under the care of just three separate owners over the past half-century, and it shows in wonderful condition as a result of their stewardship. Throughout the fall of 2023 into the spring of 2024, the Ferrari received a substantial mechanical refurbishment courtesy of Fast Cars in Redondo Beach, California. Invoices on file detail the $28,000 spent to complete this project which included a carb rebuild, belt replacement, new hoses, seals and filters, and more.

Combining one of Pininfarina’s most recognizable, timeless designs with open-air motoring and a sonorous V-8 engine, this low-mileage 308 GTS in attractive colors has much to recommend it.
