To bolster the company’s ailing finances at the start of the 1990s, Porsche needed to bring exciting new models to market. To that end, the head of Porsche Exclusive, Rolf Sprenger, submitted his three-page proposal for an ultra-focused version of the 964-type 911 Turbo 3.3.
Based around the racecar that had claimed the IMSA Supercar Championship in 1992, the forthcoming Leichtbau was to be built in incredibly limited numbers. Sporting brake cooling intakes where the front fog lights had once sat, a revised rear spoiler, 18-inch three-piece Speedline wheels over red brake calipers, plus glass fiber-reinforced carbon composite panels, thinner glass, reduced sound deadening, and simplified door cards, the Lightweight shed a quite remarkable 397 pounds.
Furthermore, the chassis was seam-welded and reinforced, while the fitment of a new alloy strut brace stiffened the front, and the ride height was lowered by 40 millimeters courtesy of sport suspension. Just 86 examples were commissioned, all of which were produced between July and November of 1992 for the 1993 model year.
Despite the already immense weight savings, the performance-boosting overhaul continued. The 3,299-cubic-centimeter flat-six engine gained more aggressive camshafts, larger fuel injectors, and a more efficient KKK turbocharger. This revised recipe helped find an additional 61 horsepower to take the grand total up to 381. Quick work of the five-speed Getrag transmission could therefore result in a reported 4.7-second sprint from 0 to 62 mph and a top speed of 180 mph. Meanwhile, rear-quarter vents borrowed from the flagship 959 supercar helped manage temperatures inside an engine bay that notably gained a red intercooler housing and air filter unit to instantly denote that this was the most extreme Turbo variant of the time.
Of the limited run, the early example offered here was delivered new in July 1992, according to the accompanying Porsche certificate. Finished by the factory in Polar Silver Metallic, which is believed to be a special-order color, over a Black leather interior, this example notably presented the already pared-back Turbo S Lightweight in its purest form. Configured without airbags, power steering, or air conditioning, the Porsche stays true to the model’s original, hardcore guiding principles. It is claimed that just 14 cars were completed in this lightest of Lightweight specifications.
Per the records of none other than Sprenger himself, who has notably signed the underside of the trunk lid, this car is recorded as the 44th Turbo S Lightweight produced. Sprenger writes that it was first owned in Germany by Mr. Peter Graf, the father of 22-time major tennis singles title winner Steffi Graf.
This car later found a new owner in Japan before being acquired by the consignor in Sweden in late 2019. Accompanying invoices (available to view on file) dated to October 2021 detail restoration work and a recommissioning carried out by marque expert Boxer Motor & Klassische Automobile of Dotternhausen, Germany. A reupholstered interior, rebuilt and painted brake calipers, refurbished wheels, plus a tune of the engine contributed to a €32,965 total, or over $34,000.
Notably retaining its matching-numbers 3.3-liter flat-six and five-speed manual transmission, this example also presents in its beautiful factory color combination. Displaying 46,946 kilometers (~29,171 miles) at the time of cataloguing, here is a wonderful opportunity to acquire what is arguably the ultimate incarnation of the 964-type 911.
