The GT3 RS was revealed towards the end of the lifespan of the 996-generation 911, with the 997-era version of the homologation special made from 2006. Upon its introduction, it was more powerful than the 996-generation GT3 it replaced, and was intended for use on the racetrack. The “RS” moniker pays homage to the German-language Rennsport, or “racing sport” in English, while the car’s colour-matched side decals and wheels give a nod to notable Porsche models from the past, such as the Carrera 2.7 RS of the early 1970s.
The GT3 RS was lighter than the GT3, as it was equipped with a polycarbonate rear window and carbon fibre bonnet and rear wing. While the official power output of the RS was rated at 381 horsepower, Porsche’s own control dynamometer allegedly showed a leap in power to nearly 400 horsepower. The German marque claimed that 0-60 mph was possible in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of around 190 mph. The RS is fitted with front and rear adjustable control arms in addition to progressive—rather than linear—springs, while the dampers are 10 to 15 per cent stiffer than the units fitted to the GT3.
The example offered for sale here was completed by the factory in February 2008, and was delivered new to Germany. The Porsche was built in Arctic Silver Metallic with a black interior featuring red six-point seatbelts, while the 19-inch GT3 wheels were painted silver from new. The first owner elected for the Sport Chrono Package Plus, and opted for additional extras including a PCM 2.1 stereo unit with extended navigation, selected interior trim finished in Alcantara and leather, and windscreen with top tint. The car was applied with large GT3 Cup stickers on each side, which are removable. Porsche connoisseurs will recognise the various other added extras that give this car its refined appearance.
The odometer reads only 14,795 km at the time of cataloguing. Fans of the iconic 911 looking for their next exciting sports car for the road or track need look no further than the GT3 RS.
