30 bhp, 903 cc Tipo 250 overhead-valve V-4 engine and Tipo 100B five-speed manual transmission.

Typical of Lancia’s inventive engineering, the small Ardea sedan utilized the smallest four-cylinder engine ever in a production automobile. Moreover, the engine utilized an exceptionally narrow-angle “vee” and sported overhead cams, a very advanced feature for such a small powerplant. By the introduction of the 4th Series in 1949, the engine boasted an improved aluminium alloy cylinder head and higher compression ratio, good for two additional horsepower. By this time, the car was also fitted with a five-speed transmission (with the fifth gear being an overdrive) – a world first for a production car.

The Ardea engine and transmission displayed here are from a 4th Series model from 1950. The engine is fitted with a distributor, fan, and radiator.
