The 911 Carrera RS was introduced by Porsche in 1992, and it was developed specifically for the European market as a lightweight, track-ready version of the Carrera 2. Whilst the RS did not look significantly different from the other 911 models, engineers in Weissach utilised the simple and time-honoured tradition of “reduce weight, add power” to create the most dynamic 911 since the original Carrera RS in 1973.

Porsche went to great lengths to trim nearly 175 kilograms of weight off of the Carrera RS. Aluminium was used for the bonnet, and thinner glass was fitted in the side and rear windows. Inside, Porsche used thinner carpeting and disposed of the 911’s usual luxuries, including its rear seats, power windows, electronically adjustable front seats, and front armrests. Porsche also chose to forgo power steering, allowing for greater steering interaction and feedback for the driver. Thanks to the use of a lightweight single-mass flywheel that weighed just 12 pounds, the Carrera RS received a healthy boost in power, which also helped to make the 3.6-litre flat-6 more responsive than the standard unit in the Carrera 2.

According to its build sheet, this very early Type 964 Carrera RS left the factory on 18 November 1991, and its warranty and service booklet is dated 6 December of that year. Finished in unmistakable Guards Red with a beautiful tri-tone Grey leather interior, reminiscent of the 959, these lightweight models were stripped by the factory of their usual amenities such as air conditioning, power steering, electric windows and seat controls, speed control, sound insulation, and entertainment system. The airbags and rear seats were also removed, and the rear area was carpeted, bringing the car’s curb weight down to just 1,220 kilograms. The door cards are very similar to those of the iconic 1973 RS 2.7, with their minimal cloth-loop door pulls and handle hardware. In addition, the RS was fitted with leather bucket seats, uprated stabilizer bars, a front strut support bar, 17-inch lightweight magnesium Cup 1-style wheels with Yokohama tyres, a limited-slip differential, and a special five-speed transmission. As with the rest of the 964 line, the rear engine cover incorporates a retractable spoiler, electrically controlled by the car’s speed.

The car remained in the custody of the original dealer, Porsche Zentrum Kiel, for several years before being sold to its first private owner, a notable Italian car collector. In 2001, it was sold to Mr Peter Busch in Würzburg, Germany, and registered with approximately 7,500 kilometres, it has remained in Germany ever since. Acquired by the current owner in 2004, the RS had been driven only 11,000 kilometres at the time. Interestingly enough, the consignor sold the car briefly only to re-acquire the RS in 2014. Now showing just over 12,000 kilometres from new, it has always been properly and routinely maintained by official Porsche dealerships throughout its life; its service booklet has been stamped by several official Porsche Zentrum facilities, including in Bergamo, Würzburg, Gersthoffen, and Münster.
