When first introduced in 1958 as a sporty, high-level trim package for the Bel Air series, Chevrolet Chief Engineer Ed Cole described the Impala as a “prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen”. The Impala struck out on its own in 1959 and instantly assumed the position as America’s best-selling car. The Impala was restyled again for the 1961 model year and was based on the new GM “B-Body” platform. Another restyling for 1963 produced what many consider the most attractive version of the Impala, with crisp lines and a low, sporty stance.
Styling was one major reason for the Impala’s success, while the other reasons came under the bonnet. The light and powerful small-block overhead-valve V-8s weighed less than the six-cylinder alternative. The V-8s also had the torque to move the big machines with alacrity. Life became even more interesting with the availability of the potent 409 big-block engine, though the small-block was clearly the staple engine.
This very attractive 1963 Impala SS two-door convertible was the subject of an older restoration. Power is provided by a 327-cubic inch small-block V-8 engine mated to a Powerglide automatic transmission. This car also has the SS equipment group, which includes bucket seats, a floor console with a floor-mounted shifter, special emblems, tri-bar wheel covers and an engine-turned dash, a console, and door panel appliqués. The lovely period Azure Aqua Metallic exterior colour is perfectly matched by the pristine blue interior.
Prepared for use, Mr Zegwaard has had oil and water temperature gauges fitted under the dash for use in modern traffic, and a retrofitted Delco FM stereo provides passenger entertainment. An original owner’s handbook is supplied in the history file; this car is on the button and as commented by the RM specialist upon inspection, “it sounds great”!
