Ford replaced its seminal Model A with the Model AC and C in 1904, the second year of production for the fledgling company. Both new models had a longer 78-inch wheelbase and a more powerful two-cylinder engine producing 10 horsepower, allowing a claimed top speed of 38 mph. The Model AC was essentially a Model A with the new engine and retained its predecessor’s “horseless carriage” look. The Model C appeared more modern, in keeping with the latest design trends. While its engine was still located under the front seat, the fuel tank was moved to the nose of the vehicle. Other innovations on the Model C included improved brakes, a larger radiator positioned in front of the hood, and the addition of running boards for better ingress and egress.
From November 1904 to December 1905, approximately 850 units were assembled and sold, according to Pate’s Early Ford Automobile Encyclopedia. While most Model C production occurred at Ford’s Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit, a percentage were assembled in Canada at Ford’s new facility in Walkerville, Ontario. These models, an example of which is offered here, featured side-entrance doors for the rear seating area and were sold at a $25 premium.
Restored approximately 45 years ago by the current owner and his father, this Model C Side-Entrance Tonneau is finished in period-correct dark green and features cream wheels and running gear, along with dual, brass side lamps and a single rear taillamp. Well-loved and enjoyed over its many years of single-family ownership, it participated in the 2011 New London to New Brighton Early Ford Registry Tour in Minnesota and was shown at the 2012 Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance, where it won the People’s Choice Award. More recently it was on display at the 2022 Old Car Festival at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan.
Ready for new adventures, this cherished Ford Model C will continue to delight its next owner, whether on tour or display.
