The 1956 Chrysler lineup received a handsome design update to the “$100 Million Dollar Look” introduced one year earlier, to include designer Virgil Exner’s now-trademark Flight Sweep tailfins. Aside from the limited-production 300, the New Yorker was Chrysler’s top-of-the-line standard offering and was appropriately powered by a 280-horsepower, 354-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 engine. Ad writers were obsessed with the word “power,” calling it the “PowerStyle” Chrysler, which featured PowerPilot Steering, PowerSmooth Brakes, and the push-button PowerFlite automatic transmission. A full range of body styles were offered including a sedan, coupe, convertible, and station wagon.
Finished in a striking red, white, and black combination with a matching interior, the car makes for quite a lovely presentation. Period-appropriate wide whitewall tires mounted on chrome Motor Wheel wire wheels add to the vintage look. Along with the signature Chrysler push-button automatic transmission, this New Yorker is well-equipped with a suite of power features—including steering, brakes, seats, and a Town & Country radio. As shown on the code tag, the original color combination featured a Rosewood Tan lower body and a Sand Dune Beige upper body.
This New Yorker Newport Two-Door Hardtop wears a well-cared for older restoration. Several invoices are on file and detail the parts ordered to keep the Chrysler in operating order. In addition, further work has been performed prior to the sale to further ensure the usability of such a stylish automobile.
With a powerful Hemi V-8 and styling composed by one the most celebrated American automotive designers, the 1956 Chrysler New Yorker aided in establishing the now iconic Space Age-inspired looks so closely associated with the mid-century era. The wonderful example on offer will provide its next lucky owner an opportunity to experience one of Chrysler’s top-of-the-line cars from this vaunted period.
